Ed Sheeran is back!
After his year off from music and 57 weeks without social media, finally Ed is back with not 1 but 2 new singles!
He took to Instagram 3 weeks ago to share his notorious light blue square which sparked rumours amongst fans.
Then on New Year’s day he shared a video of himself holding up a sign saying ‘New Music Coming Friday!!’
First single ‘Shape of you’ was initially meant for Rihanna but Sheeran decided to keep the track for himself instead. Good decision! The single has a slightly tropical dance feel to the chorus, so fits well with the lyrics which start off by describing a couple at a bar who’re flirting and dancing.
‘Castle on the Hill’ on the other hand has more of an autobiographical feel to it. Singing about his own past in the lyrics, Sheeran confessed that ‘Castle on the Hill is a love song for Suffolk’ his home town.
Both ‘Castle on the Hill’ and ‘Shape of You’ are taken from forthcoming album ÷ (divide) .
The title of Ed’s new album follows the same mathematical theme his first two: + (plus) and X (multiply). This is Sheeran’s way of standing out from other artists he has previously stated, when speaking about his past albums.
Now Ed is set to make history, as being the first artist ever to have a single at number 1 and number 2 in the charts at the same time. Things can only get better for the ‘Thinking out Loud’ singer who won a Grammy for song of the year, with the hit in 2016. The song was the first to reach 500 million streams on Spotify and Sheeran’s second album ‘X’ is one of the top-selling British albums so far this century.
